Aromatherapy is the art and science of using plant oils to bring about a change in our psychological, physical and spiritual state of health. It is a holistic therapy and one of the most popular ways to practice is to use with massage therapy.
Essential oils are the natural essences extracted from flowers, plants, leaves, woods, herbs, fruits and gums. The essential oils are blended with carrier oils that have therapeutic properties of their own. Examples of carrier oils are Sweet Almond, Peach kernel, Jojoba, Evening Primrose, Sunflower, Macadamia Nut, Rosehip, Grapeseed and many more.
Essential oils are now used widely and some of the most popular and well know are:
Lavender one of the most versatile oil with analgesic, antiseptic and antibiotic properties useful for relieving muscular pains and headaches, valuable for many skin conditions and as an aid to sleep and stress reduction.
Roman Chamomile has many similar properties to Lavender and is also soothing, calming and anti-inflammatory and helpful for stress and anxiety conditions.
Frankincense used by the Egyptians as an aid to skin care and beneficial for older skins, it has a calming effect on the emotions and the ability to slow down breathing.
After a consultation a blend of up to 3 essential oils are chosen for their therapeutic and medicinal properties and then mixed with a number of carrier oils. For anyone having an Aromatherapy massage it is recommended that you shower or bath beforehand as the oils should be kept on overnight. The oils are beneficial to the skin and the scent of the oils can have a powerful effect on the emotions, whilst the oil’s chemistry affects the body. After the massage you should always avoid strong sunlight, sunbathing, saunas and sun beds as some citrus oils can make the skin more sensitive to the sun’s rays and you will burn more easily.
An Aromatherapy treatment can bring many benefits some of which are listed below:
- Promotes feelings of calm and well being and soothes the mind
- Helpful in lifting moods to reduce nervous tension and feelings of depression
- Helps to increase energy levels and stimulates the body’s own immune system
- Enhancing Lymphatic drainage helping to reduce fluid retention and Oedema.
A typical Aromatherapy treatment is 1 hour or 90 minutes for a full body treatment.
“Caroline provides a calming and relaxing therapeutic treatment within a tranquil environment. The massage therapy benefits me enormously by way of reducing the effects of stress and anxiety I routinely feel due to a busy and demanding lifestyle.
After a treatment from Caroline I feel less tense and much more relaxed, thereby enabling me to feel more energised and able to cope with the demands and pressures of day to day life.
She also displays a friendly and welcoming manner while demonstrating good knowledge and experience of her craft.
I would have no hesitation in recommending her to others. ”Don M
